What is Somatic Experiencing?
Trauma isn't only a memory — it's a pattern held in the body. When something overwhelming happens, the nervous system mounts a survival response: fight, flight, or freeze. When that response can't complete, the body stays braced long after the danger has passed, showing up as hypervigilance, chronic tension, numbness, or anxiety that doesn't respond to logic.
Somatic Experiencing (SE), developed by Dr. Peter Levine, works with the nervous system directly. Rather than retelling the story again and again, we slow down, track sensation, and let the body discharge stress in small, manageable doses — a process called titration. It's gentle by design, and it's backed by a growing body of research on trauma and the autonomic nervous system.
For many Richmond-area clients who have spent years in traditional talk therapy, SE is the missing piece: they understand their story, but they still don't feel different. This work is about feeling different.
